Top 6 Most Stable Standing Desk Converters in 2022

Stability is one of the most important things to consider when purchasing a standing desk converter. A product that is unstable can be a big annoyance while you are working which can decrease concentration and productivity. In more extreme cases, an unstable product may be a safety risk to you, your desk items or people around you. It is very important to understand how stable the standing desk converter you are considering will be and the potential downfalls it may have. I have compiled a list of what I consider to be the most stable standing desk converters currently available in an effort to help you understand what to look for in standing desk converter stability. This is a list that will be updated and added to whenever I review a standing desk converter that meets the requirements on the list.

Results Explanation

The VertDesk Converter is overall one of the most stable standing desk converters I have tested. It has no real weaknesses and excels in almost all areas. In the sitting position, the keyboard tray lays flat against your desk and the monitor platform remains firmly in place with no bounce. This makes the VertDesk Converter incredibly stable at sitting height. The VertDesk Converter is also one of the most stable products when at standing height. There will be a slight amount of keyboard bounce and monitor shake, but the unit is very solid when standing

The DESK-V000B is another product that doesn’t have any real weaknesses when it comes to stability. It excels in almost every category. There is almost no movement when sitting. There is only a slight increase in monitor shake when standing but I do not think it is something that would negatively impact your work. Overall, this is one of the most stable converters I have tested.

The Halter ED-258 is another product that is among the most stable desktop converters I have tested. The keyboard tray has rubber stoppers underneath it that come into contact with the metal base in the lowest position. Because of this, there is no keyboard bounce when seated. The keyboard bounce is increased very slightly when standing, but it is still among the most stable keyboard trays even at the tallest height.

There is a slight amount of side to side wobble in the seated position which is increased slightly as you raise the unit. This wobble and small amount of keyboard bounce contribute to a little bit of monitor shake at both sitting and standing heights.

95/100 85/100 100/100 90/100 85/100 70/100 85/100 86/100
Results Explanation

The WorkFit-T performed very well in almost all stages of testing. At sitting height, the product is solid. The keyboard tray will go flat to your desk so there will be no keyboard bounce at sitting height. There is a slight amount of side to side wobble and a little monitor shake when sitting. At standing height, there is a little more wobble and a bit of keyboard bounce, but they are not very noticeable. There is more monitor shake at standing height due to the front to back rocking motion that I will discuss below.

Possible Downsides

In order for Ergotron to allow for their z shaped base to move straight up and down, they had to make the connection of the base to the underside of the monitor platform moveable. On the Volante, the base is attached to the back of the work surface permanently. This forces the platform to move out and forward in an arcing pattern when raised. When you raise the WorkFit-T, the connection between the underside of the monitor platform and the arms of the base, slide toward the front of the monitor platform. This means that there is no longer anything supporting the back of the monitor platform when it is raised. This produces a front to back rocking motion that contributes to a slight loss in stability across the whole unit but it most affects the monitor movement.

Results Explanation

At sitting height, the Duke is a rock. The keyboard rests on the metal base so there is no keyboard bounce. There is also no side to side wobble and the separately mounted monitor has no movement when seated.

The Duke will start to lose stability the higher you raise the unit, but even at its tallest height, it performs very well. The side to side wobble will be a bit more pronounced and the phenolic material on the keyboard tray will create a bit more bounce than the products that are higher on our list. The monitor being mounted separately means that increased keyboard bounce does not automatically correlate to more monitor shake, like units without dual ergonomics. So, the monitor shake remains good at all heights.

Possible Downsides

The one downside is that when raising the Duke VESA to its higher heights, it will have a slight amount of front to back rocking. While this is not a huge detriment, it will increase the overall instability of the Duke VESA at its highest heights.

Results Explanation

At sitting height, the QuickStand is solid. The keyboard platform lays flat on your existing desk so there is no keyboard movement. The clamp mount produces no side to side wiggle from the column and the separately mounted monitor has no movement while sitting.

When standing, there is a slight amount of side to side wobble on the keyboard tray and a high amount of keyboard bounce. Even though the monitor is separately mounted with a solid connection, the keyboard bounce is pronounced enough to negatively affect the monitor shake.

Possible Downsides

The biggest downfall to the QuickStand is the high amount of keyboard bounce when standing. The QuickStand is among the worst offenders when it comes to keyboard bounce at standing height. The QuickStand performed well in the other stages of testing so it was able to achieve a good overall score. But, if you are looking for product that has a solid keyboard, you probably want to find another option.

In order to make the list of most stable standing desk converters, the product must have an overall stability rating of 80/100 or better. I have found that this is a good breaking point to separate the most stable products from the rest of the pack. Any product that scored this well through my testing is one that I feel very confident about recommending to someone looking for the most stable desktop converters.

After months of testing 40+ adjustable desktops, the results are in!

I have split the scoring into four main categories: wobble, bounce, shake and general. Wobble refers to any side to side movement on a converter. This can include the keyboard tray, monitor platform or mounting columns. Bounce refers to the up and down movement present on the keyboard tray when you press on it. Shake refers to the amount of monitor movement when typing, adjusting and bumping the unit. General is a category I had to make for miscellaneous things like tipping, units not fully locking, awkward twisting, etc.

I weighted each category at 25% but then I broke the wobble, bounce and shake categories down into sitting and standing. These categories received a slightly higher weighted percentage for the standing percentages with 15% of the weight being on the standing position and 10% on the sitting position. A visual of my category breakdown is below:

I do not have a scientific method for testing and I do not have specific stats based on controlled experiments. I could not think of an easy way to set up measurable testing that could be presented to you. All of my testing numbers are based from me physically working with them, adjusting them and comparing them to the other standing desk converters that I have in our office. I will push the converters from all different angles while sitting or standing to see if there is any noticeable wobble or rocking. I will type with the unit very lightly as well as aggressively to get a good idea of how the stability will be for different types of users. I will watch the monitor specifically during all types of pushing, adjusting and typing to score the monitor individually.

Testing the stability of converters

The scoring is based more on a curve than meeting a certain threshold to achieve a certain score. Since I have around 20 different desktop converters here, it is very easy for me to test the stability of a product compared to almost any other product I need to. For this reason, my rankings are very accurate when comparing a specific converter to its peers. I am confident in saying that nobody has ordered, tested, used and reviewed more standing desk converters than I have. These are not forensic reviews based off of reading stats from the manufacturers website. I have purchased, tested and written in-depth reviews for over 20 different standing desk converters and that number will continue to rise.

There are many different factors that are going to contribute to which standing desk converter is best suited for you. Stability should definitely be one of them. There are many different aspects to consider when it comes to stability. Some factors will be more important to some people than others. This list is not the end all be all. This is simply my opinion, which is based on hundreds of hours of testing, on dozens of different standing desk converters. If you feel that something should be weighted differently or a category should be completely omitted, then by all means use my data to create a ranking based more on your preferences and tastes. In the end, I hope to have provided you with a solid foundation of what to look for when it comes to stability on your standing desk converter.
